Parents Raise Yourself to Raise Your Kids!

I do not know about you, but laTely, I've been seeing a lot more articles and books written on the subject of parenting. A lot of these articles and books talk about parents improving themselves first so that they can be better prepared to help their kids. I could not agree more with this new trend in parenting, and I could not be happier about it. Personal development, self-improvement, and life-long learning are things that I've been preaching about to teens through my many years as an educator, coach, parent, author, and speaker.

Parents, believe it or not, sometimes it makes a lot of sense to do for yourself first and then for others second. It's not always the selfish thing to do. Have you ever been on an airplane? What do they tell you to do with the oxygen mask in case of emergency? That's right. Put on your own mask first and then assist your child. There is a good reason that they tell you to do it in that order, right?

And the excellent thing here is that if you improve yourself or raise yourself, then your kids will see you doing something about your weaknesses and learn a lot about you and life. Our kids learn a lot just through the power of observation. And if our kids see us raising our standards and raising our expectations for what we are expected to get out of life, as well as what we are expected to put into life, then they too will raise their standards, expectations, and efforts.

Believe it or not, raising ourselves is a great way to raise our children. Also, raising ourselves is an excellent way of becoming happier. Is not that what we all really want in the end? We all want a happier life for us and our kids, right?

Now, as my Granddaddy always said, "Go learn, lead, and lay the way to a better world for all of us." Raise yourself to raise your kids. And once again, thanks in advance for all that you do, and all that you will do …
